The 4 I's of oppression

In the video we were assigned this week, we watched Luna Malbroux discusses the 4 I's of oppression. I have heard of this concept prior to college in my high school education class. The 4 types of oppression are:

Interpersonal:

-Exclusion based on a persons appearance

-Microagression; hearing something that is phrased as a backhanded, and taking it way too far/ responding to a situation with

-Treating people differently based on any of their personal aspects

-Harassing someone for not conforming to gender norms

-Writing homophobic statements on someones property/ social media

Institutional:

-School funding

-A form of institutional oppression is segregation

-Certain laws are in place for certain people with personal differences ie. disabilities

-Practices in government, schooling, healthcare and legal system that give certain groups of people disadvantages opposed to others

Internalized:

-Messages are not specifically stated

-Internalized idea that some people are different/ better than others

-Internalized ideations of people are talked about very rarely

-Dominant narrative reverbs societal norms in the eyes of the people

-Stereotypes and prejudices about certain groups of people

Idealogical:

-Gender stereotypes ("real boy/ real girl")

-"Boys don't cry"

-"Girls wear pink"

-"Boys wear blue"

-Normalized ideations about certain groups of people. Inclusion matters: [Part 1] Diversity matters | Thoughtworks
