Ethnic Studies

This week’s blog is on the reading “The Academic and Social Value of Ethnic Studies A Research Review” by Christine E. Sleeter and A Short History of Public Schooling-Excerpt from the film "Class Dismissed”. The video gives us a deep insight into the 1900's and how the world has progressed in the horrific acts of racism. In the beginning we learn how the students learned in their own home rather than in schools. After that, bills were passed into congress in order to get students into schools to build regimen around the war. I truly think that the only reasons that these bills were passed into law were to turn generations into militia for the United States, strict and organized. Students were taught to follow bells, follow a strict schedule, sit still. etc.. The entire basis of education was built (and still follows) that of the early 1900's, Its 2025 and for some reason we still stick to the same strict following. Education needs to be rebuilt and rethought in order for the next generation to truly be educated. As a future teacher, I truly believe that the education system needs to be re-designed for strong education in the future. The use and relationship of racial, ethnic, and ancestral categories.... | Download Scientific Diagram

  1. Hi Paige, I think your picture really ties together what we are learning about in class. I do agree with updating the school system. My own high school experience we had no classes offered to us about any ethnic studies.

  2. It is wild to think that public schools hold their origins in warfare and violence. We think of public schooling as a way for all people, no matter where they come from, to become prepared for either higher education or to enter the workforce as a contributing member of society. But, back in the early 19th century, all the public schools were there for was to make people obedient and ready for a warhead-esque lifestyle. Even though we have shifted past this mindset, we still see aspects of this traditionalist procedure in our everyday school life (as you said, sitting still, following bells, etc.)

  3. Agreed, this is insane that we still follow a "war prep" type of school structure. Especially because of the more critical thinking and self-epressive classes on petitions to get taken out of schools.
